This quick tip shows you how to open SVG files in PowerPoint (or PPT). For the purpose of this lesson, we use the Donut Maker online app to produce a SVG file. If you need an SVG file, then use the Donut Maker to quickly create one.
All the steps to this how-to are performed on a Windows PC using Microsoft 365. However, the steps are compatible with PowerPoint 2007 or higher.
How to open SVG files in PowerPoint
For the most part, you can use the same method to open any image in PPT. We focus on SVGs here, because it is part of a set of lessons involving the file type.
Currently, we have a vector file in our Downloads folder. This is where the Donut Maker saved the file.
Steps to insert SVG file into PowerPoint

- From the drop-down menu select This Device…
As a result, the Insert Picture dialog box appears. This will allow you to select and insert a picture into PPT.
- Select the location of the SVG image on your system
- In the file list section, click on the SVG file you want to insert into PPT
- Lastly, click Insert
Finally, your image is now part of your PPT file.
Drag and drop method
Sometimes, you can drag and drop an image file directly from your file explorer. If you choose to do that, then you have to make sure you do not drag an SVG into a textbox. Otherwise, you may not see the image. Instead, you may see something that looks like XML code.
