Digital Excel Numbers – The DEN app

Digital Excel Numbers app - Alex Shaw III (AS3rd)

Overview of Digital Excel Numbers

Digital Excel Numbers (or DEN) is a fun, creative, and easy to use spreadsheet app. Basically, it turns a number into an electronic-looking figure. DEN is an Excel tool.

By the way, we know there are fonts you can use and other stuff, but DEN is unique. Moreover, you can create your own digits. Also, DEN is open source. Therefore, go in there and peek around, see what you can do.

Requirements

  • Microsoft Excel 2007 or higher or compatible
  • Wingdings font

Note: If you do not have the WIngdings font, then you will most likely see n’s and l’s instead of dots and squares. Overall, it should come with Micrsoft Windows.

Using DEN

So, all you have to do to use DEN is enter a number, select a dot type, and use the final digital image.

Basic generation of a DEN figure

DEN - Enter number, select dot type, and grab electronic image - Alex Shaw III (AS3rd)
  1. Enter a number up to 10 digits long. The number can contain digits from 0 to 9. In addition, you can enter characters S and B. S is short for separator, and B is short for blank space.
  2. Select a dot type, which is optional. Currently, you can select either squares or dots.
  3. Finally, an updated image is generated from your number input. This image is dynamic and will change when you update the number. Now, you can copy this image from the DEN sheet and onto any sheet in the file. Futhermore, you can copy it as a regular image to other programs.

Note: Do not resize image on DEN sheet. Instead, copy it to a different sheet, and resize it from there.

Tip: If you have issues entering a DEN starting with zero (0), then start your input with an apostrophe (‘).

Creating your own figures

In Digital Excel Numbers, you have the option of creating your own figures. Always use caution when making changes to the area below the Number map.

  1. Below Number map, use the 1’s to create a digit. Adjacent to the map, you will see a preview as you plot your digits. As you see, you can also change the separator and blank maps.
  2. Once completed, copy the entire map and paste it into the desired number placeholder. Do not change any labels above the placeholders.

Tip: Although we are working with numbers, you can create alpha characters too, if you want. However, you only get six placeholders. Also, you will need to remember which numbers you assign them to.

Changing the colors

With Digital Excel Numbers, you have the option of changing the color of the DEN.

If you want to change the color of the dots or squares, then use a new font color. The background is just a fill color. Of course, the DEN image updates automatically.

Resizing DEN

When you update your number, the DEN should automatically resize. If it does not resize, then the image will look distorted. In that case, you will have to manually resize the DEN.

The resizing issue is known to Microsoft. Go to this link to learn more – Image does not update immediately. ScreenUpdating property is set to False in Excel 2010.
